How can our projects bring systemic change in an uncertain world?
The essence of systemic thinking processes for social impact. What challenges do we face? How can we address them effectively?

A workshop on the importance of systemic change in Greece.
Invited by the Actors of Urban Change program that empowers urban changemakers across Europe to collaborate in innovative ways for more sustainable, inclusive, and just cities, we travelled to Santorini to explore the question: Can the system change?
Our workshop aimed to reflect on our own roles within the systems we operate in, to learn practical tools for understanding how systems work, and to explore how our projects can become more systemically impactful.

Starting with a brainstorming of the tools and methods of Systems Thinking, placing them along the “Technical and Non-technical” and “Academic and Applied” spectrum, we explored how these approaches relate to real-world practice. We then focused on identifying the leverage points within each participant’s project: those critical places in a system where a small shift can lead to significant change.
We wrapped up the workshop by analyzing the question “How can I make my project more systemic?”, breaking it down phase by phase (initiation, planning, execution, and close) and offering concrete ideas for each step.

The training for the Greek teams of Actors of Urban Change strengthened their understanding of systemic approaches with practical knowledge, supported the links between decisions and their broader impact, and opened up new opportunities to boost the effectiveness of each project.
