Sustainable transportation and green cities at Voltaro project with 4.000 visitors every year since 2017 (Periphery of Central Macedonia)

Voltaro project is a flagship initiative of Periphery of Central Macedonia since 2017 with 4.000 visitors and 100+ organisations

Voltaro initiative was held annually from 2017 to 2023, aiming to highlight the local ecosystem of North Greece and showcase new technologies developed in the fields of mobility, sustainable transportation, circular economy, green cities, and more.

More than 80 organizations, businesses, and educational institutions and 28,000+ citizens have participated in Volatro!

Driven by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the Periphery of Central Macedonia (PCM) launched Voltaro initiative in 2017 in collaboration with us.

Voltaro was designed based on co-creation and gamification principles:

  • Co-creation: The project is the result of collaboration between dozens of organizations, volunteers, companies, research centers, and employees from the Periphery of Central Macedonia. It is crucial for us to equally showcase the contributions of all participating organisations, as participatory processes foster deeper connections and dialogue among citizens.

  • Gamification: The initiative takes place on a single day during the European Mobility Week in the form of a “game.” Citizens explore different stations, discover new technologies, and answer questions to participate in a game with prizes. These questions are designed not only to inform but also to collect data on citizens’ opinions and behaviors. The results of this process are utilized to evaluate awareness-raising actions each year and to improve future mobility policy decisions.

For us, Voltaro is not just a project. It is a case study of meaningful collaboration between the public sector, civil society, private companies and academia.

Voltaro has hosted a variety of initiatives, including:

  • A best practices workshop on the operation of the Regional Innovation Hub for Urban Mobility, co-organized by the Hellenic Institute of Transport (IMET/CERTH) and the Periphery of Central Macedonia.
  • #gopafree, featuring special recycling bins from Cigaret Cycle NGO.
  • An interactive kiosk by the Solid Waste Management Authority (FODSA), featuring educational games.
  • Coffee waste recycling, in collaboration with InCommOn NGO.
  • A unique educational activity on drivers’ “blind spots,” organised by the Thessaloniki Transport Authority in collaboration with OASTH (Thessaloniki Public Transport Organization), the Thessaloniki Cycling Sports Club, and the Traffic Police.
