CASE STUDY

A participatory design workshop to tackle key challenges of a central area in Beirut, Lebanon

Through a collaborative approach, participants engaged in problem-solving, ideation, and strategic planning to explore innovative and sustainable solutions for the city’s urban landscape.

Hamra is Beirut’s central commercial neighborhood, with a diverse mix of small shops, heritage buildings, cafés, and schools.

During this Design Sprint, 20 professionals from various fields worked together to tackle three major challenges affecting the area.

Using participatory methodologies and Design Thinking processes, we collaborated to analyae challenges and develop collective, actionable solutions. Throughout the workshop, we engaged with local NGOs, stakeholders, and business owners, gaining valuable insights from the community. By the end of the program, teams experimented with their ideas in real urban spaces, testing their feasibility and impact.

Our collaboration with Architects for Change (Lebanon) and Starters for Communities (Netherlands) fostered a holistic approach to urban challenges, bringing together local expertise and global best practices for sustainable neighborhood development.
