Park(ing) Day: Co-designing the use of an avenue that crosse the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Municipality of Kalamaria
An initiative where citizens, urban planners and local authorities reimagined and transformed public streets into vibrant, people-friendly spaces.

Together with Thessaloniki Metropolitan Development Agency, we designed a project to disseminate the impact of the Interreg REMEDIO project. As part of this effort, we organized two ”Park(ing) Day” interventions in the Municipalities of Thessaloniki and Kalamaria.
Park(ing) Day is a global movement where parking spaces are temporarily transformed into public parks, raising awareness about public space, environmental consciousness, and small-scale interventions. The initiative began in San Francisco in 2005 and has since spread worldwide.
With the completion of the REMEDIO project, that focused on redesigning Vasilissis Olgas Avenue into a low-traffic corridor, we created an interactive public engagement initiative to inform residents and business owners in the area about the project findings.
By simulating some of the project’s proposed changes, this temporary intervention encouraged public interaction with urban planning research. The feedback of the citizens and the insights from people working in the area were vital in refining the project’s conclusions.
- Two Municipalities (Thessaloniki & Kalamaria) actively participated in the initiative.
- Local organizations, such as Infinity Greece, supported the event with awareness activities.
- Researchers from the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas presented the project findings.
- More than 500 residents engaged and learned about REMEDIO project.
This initiative bridged the gap between research and everyday citizens, empowering our believe that urban change starts with participation.
